The gaye device If you like your tape loops minimal and wibbly, then this is for you! Either put it on and kind of drift around doing stuff or get horizontal and really get into the sound. Anyway...I like it...so there.

Rhodes & a tape loop
Recorded at the Temple of Broom, Leven
22/04/20

When I was about 16 years old I spent two days trying to make a tape loop & ended up with a big pile of snapped cassettes & loads of tiny bits of tape superglued to my fingers for ages.

It was an amazing experience because it cured me of ever wanting to make tape loops again.

But then a few years later someone invented youtube & a few years after that someone invented "related videos" on youtube. Then a few years after that someone invented the coronavirus and it was only a matter of time until tape loops found a way into my life again.

So 20 years later I made my first working tape loops thanks to a youtube tutorial. It turns out tape loops are easy to make, I was just doing everything wrong. Like using superglue.

The first thing I recorded onto the loop was a few notes on my Rhodes. Right away I thought it sounded amazing & couldn't wait to add more instruments & things on top, but as soon as that thought entered my head I felt a cool hand rest on my brow, and heard a voice saying

"...imagine..."

"...imagine a life where the 16-year-old Limo Cunningham had managed to make those tape loops work..."

It was the voice of the ghost of Terry Riley even though he's still alive and he had come to stop me ruining this album.

"...no my friend..."

he continued

"...layering & adding music to this loop is not the way to proceed..."

"...here you have a chance to peer into an alternate existence where you have spent years working only in the beautiful world of pure tape-manipulated sound..."

"...instead of popular music that you are now too saggy-faced and tired to play properly anyway..."

"...and without all those rubbish notes you usually play..."

"...and that terrible voice of yours..."

Well I was getting worried that he was going to keep slagging me off harder and harder so I was like "yes ghost of Terry Riley, your words are fair and true, I will do as you say except add some reverb once you have gone away".

So this album is an 8-second tape loop with 4 tracks of Rhodes piano on, for 40 minutes. Sometimes I turn one of the tracks down and then I turn it back up again. It's so nice.

There's not much to it but I listen to it all the time. Sometimes I have it playing & I don't even listen.

I called it 'maybe music' because when I was recording it I was thinking "maybe this will turn out to be music, maybe it won't".

As always, massive thanks to Vicey & Billy for lending & gifting me loads of the equipment that I make music on these days.

Thanks to my family for indulging/encouraging/humouring me.

I'm a lucky bastard.
